Year of the Tiger

Thursday, 18 February 2010

The Year of the Tiger is upon us and the city of Amsterdam and the Chinese embassy were so kind to have a reception at the Krasnapolsky hotel in the centre of town. Champagne, dumplings and good company!

ABN AMRO Tennis tournament

Monday, 8 February 2010

We had the pleasure of being invited to the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament as VIP guests by the sponsor, the currently state owned ABN AMRO bank. To keep it somewhat businesslike a networking session and presentation by trendwatcher Adjied Bakas was held. The main reason for the event, however, was to watch one of the matches on centre court.

Great friends

Saturday, 30 January 2010

My cousins Luca and Boaz love to hang out together, as they do here at Nana & Opa's house in Groningen. We all suspect that they will roam the streets of Amsterdam North in later years as partners in crime, charming everybody they meet.

Final lecture

Friday, 29 January 2010

After the symposium the crowd moved the Academy Building of the university for dad's final lecture. To his amazement the Aula was filled to capacity (300+ people) by students, colleagues, friends and family.

Farewell symposium

Today my dad officially ends his career as a professor at Groningen University. In honour of his event a symposium was held at the faculty. Two friends, Richard Buxton and Ken Dowden, and a former student held lectures for the invited audience of colleagues, friends and family.

Winter's back!

Wednesday, 6 January 2010

We're having an old school winter this year. After the Christmas snow we thought that would be it, but the climate has surprised us once more with a blanket of snow. England has been suffering from the heay snow fall the last few days. I wonder how much we will get in Holland.

Happy New Year!

Friday, 1 January 2010

As is the Dutch tradition, 2010 was welcomed by the mass use of fireworks. For almost two hours the skies over Amsterdam were lit up. Happy New Year!

Visiting Nana

Tuesday, 29 December 2009

I have joined my parents for a few days in Bristol (UK) to see my Nana. The last time I saw her was a year ago when the whole family spent Christmas in England. It's great to see her, although it is a shame that the strokes she's had have affected her speech and makes communicating difficult. Glad that she's still with us, though, and that she's able to see her new great-grandchildren!

Family Christmas

Saturday, 26 December 2009

Christmas is the time for a family get-together, this year with the addition of a baby boy and girl. Christmas lunch was had on Boxing Day with all siblings providing parts of the meal and Santa bringing some presents. As is the English tradition, paper crowns from crackers were worn and trifle was had for desert.
